Enemy AI in War Robots: making bots that are smart — but not too smart
War Robots is a multiplayer third-person team shooter based on the Unity engine. Players control enormous humanoid robots and engage in battle with one another. Yet, despite the fact that the main part of the game is dedicated to multiplayer battles, the game also has PvE matches.
Initially, these PvE encounters were implemented in the simplest form possible — as tutorials, where players fought against bots in the very first matches. Then, after completing their training, they went on to play with other players, never again returning to bot battles — untill we implemented a full-fledged PvE mode.
Vladimir Popov, a Client Developer on the War Robots project, wrote an article on how we created our bots – and made them fun.
